Tuesday's vote to reject the incinerator came despite the findings of a £100,000 public consultation to which 88 percent who responded were in favour of an MBT VOI shoes plant, including those who would have the plant on their doorstep.

The plant was the key proposal of a group of local MBT Sport Shoes Grey in the east of the province- known as arc21- to deal with their waste as a means of meeting tough European regulations on waste disposal and landfill.
